Our national heritage includes our native plant species. Only a few hundred years ago our land was teeming with handsome plants which supported vast varieties of native insects, birds and other animals. People from all over the world have come to live in this land now, bringing with them plants from their home countries. Botanists refer to these plants as alien species, many of which have now aggressively choked out the original natives.
Cheryl’s Herbs' Native Collection specifically features herbs native to our home state of Missouri. They are the true locals of our area and have adapted over the years to Missouri’s ever changing, irregular winter, spring and hot summer. These hardy herbs actually prefer some of our bad soil and wouldn’t choose to live just anywhere!
Passion Flower
You may recognize that the individual healing herbs of this collection natively grow in other select states in America as well but these particular herbs were in fact part of the original Missouri landscape. Cheryl’s Herbs is proud to be doing our part to preserve our natural heritage.
Most of the herbs for this collection have been grown from seed collected in native stands within about 100 miles from St. Louis. They have the best opportunity to do well because they are already adapted to our exact local climate. Our precious stands are helping to preserve these local strains. New developments have already caused the disappearance of some of the original colonies.
