Cheryl’s Herbs offers a selection of adaptogenic herbs. Much can be said in support of adaptogenic herbs, but, generally speaking, we’re talking about a type of herb, an adaptogen, that normalizes the functions of our body systems, maintains homeostasis, strengthens resistance to stress, and is non-toxic and generally well-tolerated for long-term use.
One of the most popular adaptogens we sell is Ashwagandha Root. In David Winston’s book, Adaptogens, Herbs for Strength, Stamina, and Stress Relief, you will find mention of this herb in relation to many conditions.
In ayurvedic medicine, Ashwagandha is considered a rasayana meaning it is a highly revered herb capable of strengthening and energizing the mind, increasing physical energy and sexual ability, aiding the ability to recuperate, and extending life. Ashwagandha builds stamina.
It stands out as an adaptogen by way of supporting proper function of the adrenal glands which, due to a one-time intense stressor or chronic stress, can become overworked, fatigued, and depleted of the ability to maintain normal operating function.
Ashwagandha has been found to stimulate the thyroid gland so may offer assistance in hypothyroidism.
It is protective of the heart.
Because it is also a nervine herb, one which supports the nervous system, it can assist in conditions of anxiety and depression.
It can help improve sleep.
It can help improve the function of the brain.
As an immunomodulator, or immune system regulator, it may be employed to help with autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.
As an anti-inflammatory, it supports the musculo-skeletal system.
Ashwagandha promotes diuresis and is helpful in weight management as a promoter of good digestion and energy.
It may benefit us in cancer with an anti-tumor effect; it is protective of us as we endure radiation and/or chemotherapy.
Easing our passage through old age, as a rasayana, Ashwagandha Root shares with us her wisdom by helping to prevent or inhibit the uncomfortable conditions that tend to develop as we grow older. Aging, in itself, is a significant source of stress.
As it is written by Donald Yance in his book Adaptogens in Medical Herbalism, “Ashwagandha is . . . one of a group of elite herbal medicines reputed to promote physical and mental health, to augment resistance of the body against disease and diverse adverse environmental factors, to revitalize the body in debilitated conditions, and to increase longevity.” I couldn’t speak to the power of this herb any better than that.

BOTANICAL SAFETY INFORMATION
Generally very safe and well-tolerated when used appropriately. Avoid if allergic to members of the Solanaceae family (nightshades). Avoid during pregnancy. Avoid with hyperthyroidism. Can potentiate the effect of barbiturates. Large doses may cause vomiting and diarrhea. Do not use the powdered version of Ashwagandha if you suffer excess iron.
